We believe the arts should be accessible to all regardless of income or circumstance.

Please email us at info@suitcasetheatre.com with any questions about having a show at your school.

In 2013, Suitcase Theatre was granted a generous donation from The Tachane Foundation to take our plays into schools, hospitals and communities where children might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience live musical theatre. Today, we have performed at no charge for over 20,000 children from low income communities, in model inner city schools and in special settings like Sick Kids Hospital.

Our performances and programs inspire young minds through storytelling, music and the visual and dramatic arts. Our theatrical plays and workshops inform children’s imaginations through positive role modeling, lively music, engaging puppets and movement. All of our plays:

  • Connect live theatre with creative problem solving, risk taking and team building
  • Integrate all of the ARTS, storytelling and literacy
  • Educate the imagination and inform fantasy
  • Enrich vocabulary development
  • Help understand narrative structure and theatre production using recycled and creative props
  • Develop self-confidence and collaborative skills
  • Teach roles of speaking, singing, dancing, puppetry and creative movement

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Eligible schools will be selected and evaluated on the Learning Opportunity Index (LOI) established by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and through discussion with staff from the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Schools with a lower ranking will be eligible as will daycares that are not-for-profit and have a certain percentage of subsidized spaces. If you are not a school in the TDSB or TCDSB, programs with a high ESL population, show limited access and mobility and/or take part in a Breakfast Club program, for instance, may be eligible.

Please submit a short paragraph (approximately 300 words) explaining why your school should be considered and the special needs of your school and student population. Please also include your LOI rating and information about your school population and the community you serve. We will do everything in our power to accommodate everyone. It may take a month for us to reply to your request but please know that we are working on coordinating efforts behind the scenes to accommodate the hundreds of requests we receive.

Please contact us with any questions. For information about booking a non-sponsored show or in-class workshop for your school, please contact info@suitcasetheatre.com or call us at 647-654-7529 (PLAY).

Outreach in the Community photo gallery

In 2015, we launched a successful 10-week pilot project in partnership with Art City Toronto, a not for profit organization based in St. James Town. The community is located in Toronto’s inner city and the majority of the residents are new to Canada and come from countries where they have experienced war, poverty and abuse. It is Canada’s most densely populated community and the average family income is less than $23,000/year.

Today, Suitcase Theatre offers weekly drama and dance classes at no charge to the children at Art City. By partnering with Art City, we are able to enrich the programming they offer without the need to invest in additional overhead.

We also work in partnership with Ronald McDonald House and Gilda’s Club of Greater Toronto by offering curriculum-based drama and dance workshops to the children who attend school at Ronald McDonald House. For the families who enjoy the services offered through Gilda’s Club of Greater Toronto, we run a series of dance workshops, PA Day activities and camp programs as part of Suitcase Theatre’s ongoing commitment to reach children with a positive arts experience.

Suitcase Theatre would like to thank Johanna Weaver for sponsoring our community outreach programs to Ronald McDonald House from 2016-2019.
